Today the JRPG is a niche product, more likely found in the clearance bin than the top shelf, so what happened?

I was playing Civilization 5, I wanted to win and I knew that destroying India was the only way I could do that. I had attacked plenty of other civilizations before, but for some reason this time it felt wrong.
